Further training as a specialist physician

Internationalization of further training courses for specialist physicians

Certification by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (EBCOG) and European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO): Under the umbrella of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), the European specialist societies have joined together to standardize training and qualifications in Europe. In the field of gynaecology and obstetrics, standardization has taken place under the umbrella of the EBCOG, leading to the option of specialist further training with four specialist subjects. Certification of training hospitals is provided by the EBCOG, but the content of the courses and certification are established by the European specialist societies. In the field of gynaecological oncology, the ESGO is responsible for this.

In 2001, the ESGO produced an initial document with criteria for a European Gynaecological Cancer Centre. During the following years, after intensive discussion between the UEMS, EBCOG, and ESGO, a final standardized and Europe-wide catalogue was established.

In addition to evidence of minimum numbers of surgical procedures - e.g., at least 100 primary invasive operations for genital malignancies per year - the catalogue in particular includes requirements affecting the interdisciplinary nature of quality assurance and training and further training structures. The catalogue also includes scientific criteria. The detailed requirements can be consulted at www.esgo.org/training.asp. The application form can also be downloaded from the same web site. Two centres in Germany, Freiburg and Erlangen, currently have certification.

Recognition and accreditation of gynaecological oncology centres and thus of gynaecological oncology training centres will make it possible to achieve a standardized level of training throughout Europe. The European requirements are largely identical to the further training content required for the new specialist field of gynaecological oncology in Germany.
