The term 'translational research'
is currently in frequent use. On the one hand, it covers the idea of translating
findings from basic science into clinical applications, while on the other
it also involves the idea of generating basic-science inquiries on the basis
of clinical observations. In recent years, there have been successful examples
of translational research in Germany as well. For example, a group of colleagues
with an interest in this field - who were meeting for an annual symposium
in the framework of the Research Group on Molecular Biology in Gynaecology
(Arbeitskreis Molekularbiologie in der Frauenheilkunde, AMF) to exchange
and critically debate their scientific findings - developed a multicentre
project sponsored by German Cancer Aid on familial breast and ovarian cancer.
A symposium organized by the Breast Organ Commission in 2003 on current
basic-science and translational research in breast cancer, held at Lake
Werbellin near Berlin, showed that the research groups still have a very
strong interest in more scientific exchanges and collaborations. For this
reason, the former Chair of the AGO, Prof. Gunter Bastert, set up a commission
to deal with gynaecological oncology research at the interface between basic
research and clinical research - the 'Translational Research' (TraFo) Commission.
The Commission collaborates closely with the AGO's Organ Commissions and
aims to contribute to analyzing scientific activities in the field of gynaecological
oncology in Germany and ensure more intensive networking. This also includes
organizing scientific meetings every two years.
All those who are interested in the science of gynaecological oncology and
translational research who would like to receive information about all of
the Commission's activities and about the arrangement of planning meetings
and scientific symposia should send their e-mail addresses to the Commission.
There are no limitations or special requirements here. You can simply register
without further commitment on the 'TraFo' home page: http://trafo.ago-online.de.
After this, personal access to the closed members' area is made available.
On the home page, every member can then enter his or her own projects in
translational research, so that a general overview of the research situation
in Germany can gradually be developed here. (From Frauenarzt 2005; 46: 152.)
A report on the Commission's first Symposium, held in Heidelberg in July
2005, was published in Frauenarzt in January 2006. |
